05:56 pm - 2010 Shorty Awards and Twitter
Happy New Year! 2010 is here. and should we call it the "tweens" or the "tens" or the "o-tens"? i dont know, but i do like the way 2010 in print!
today i found out about the Shorty Awards ...a award in various categories for best Twitter use. I particularly like the design category...although it seems like all the design stuff is centered on the Twitter page and not the actual posts--I'd like to see someone do clever ASCII art or something like that.
its interesting: i just spent the last 20 minutes on Twitter, finding people who looked interesting and following them. I feel like this is SO much more acceptable on Twitter than on, say, Facebook. If someone started randomly friending me on Facebook, I would tell them to stop/block them/etc. But on Twitter (and also on LibraryThing actually), I think its fun to meet new people and follow interesting people that I don't know. I wonder what exactly it is about Twitter that makes this ok? Maybe the 40 character limit? Or the absence of the profile as the central object? You focus on the post.....not the person. That's cool.
and now: cleaning my house. lots of cleaning. it just gets dirty, sitting there unoccupied....and the party i had last night does NOT help that front at all.... :)

07:54 pm - new years eve
so i have four friends coming over--get this:
-one doesnt drink at ALL
-one drinks a little, but is REALLY awkward about it
-one drinks but likes to comment on how much/if someone else is drinking
-one is my best friend, who is like me and normal.
None of them really like to do much at a party other than my best friend. we are going to sit and stare at each other for four hours.
ive decided to put in a disaster movie so that i dont go crazy.
wish me luck with this gothic gathering!
call me at midnight?
01:52 am - Sidecars are for bitches.
Fuck, this hurts so much.
I know it hurts. That's life. If nothing else, It's life. It’s real, and sometimes it fuckin’ hurts, but it's sort of all we have.

10:13 pm - blast from the past
tonight i was looking through some old boxes and i found a composition notebook that my boyfriend from high school and i had sent back and forth the year he went off to NYU. he got married a few months back, and reading through that notebook tonight sure was interesting. i only skimmed it--im not sure i am far enough removed from it to really read it.....but i remember thinking at the time how dreadfully important everything i was writing was. and now, well its so terribly juvenile and UNimportant. its interesting though--i used to read the LM Montegomery books and envy the girls in them for having such exciting, journal-filled lives...but I had that too--it just didnt seem so until now going back and reading it.
anyways....on one page I taped 25 quarters---apparently I was worried that he wouldn't call? :P
01:53 am - two days before christmas...
dear delta airlines:
while a girl might expect to lose a good percent of her formalwear in one day, she does NOT wish to also lose her favorite shoes. the mission to find my bag starts NOW.

03:17 am - the garbage people
as someone who spends a good deal of time walking home from the theatre at 2, 3 and 4 o'clock in the morning, i am intimately familiar with the nocturnal activity in my area during the wee hours of the morning. one interesting type of nightowl i like to affectionately call 'the garbage people'. these people wait until around 1-2 am and then they systematically begin to root through all the garbage that is sitting on the street, collecting whatever they find interesting or potentially useful and hauling it off in their cart--usually one of those push deals, but sometimes an enterprising garbage person has found a shopping cart. usually these garbage people don't talk to you, but every once in a while, like tonight, they will pop out from behind a pile of garbage and wish you goodnight.
goodnight, garbage people.

12:26 pm - w h auden
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
